This coming weekend (13th - 14th February) sees our Termly boad games weekend. We have S0.09 in Social Studies booked between 9am and 11pm on both the Saturday and Sunday, and will have a wide variety of games for folk to play, so turn up whenever you like and join in!
In addition, on the Saturday evening (provisionally at 6pm) We'll be auctioning of some of the Society's rarely-played games and duplicate books, to raise a bit of cash and clear some storage space. We've not finalised the details yet, but I'm going to post a list of games currently not being regularly brought to meetings to give you all a flavour of what's likely to be on offer: QUOTE Doom B5 Wars 1st Edition B5 Wars 2nd Edition Settlers of Catan (including Seafarers, Cities & Knights and Traders & Builders expansions) Everyway Succession Wars Arkham Horror x2 Pueblo Lord of the Rings Shogun Risk Mighty Empires Rune Bound (Box somewhat damaged) Battletech x2 Hera and Zeus Woolly Bully Gootmu Set Railway Rivals (plus tube containing additional maps) Enemy in Sight Global Thermonuclear War (in bag instead of box) Light Speed (in bag instead of box) Trailer Park Gods (in bag instead of box) Timeline (in bag instead of box) Nexus (in bag instead of box) Flux Grass Mag Blast Assorted siege engine models The Awful Green Thing from Outer Space Igloo Pop Fish Eat Fish Assorted Kings and Things Pieces (no rules or box) Naval War Illuminati Star Munchkin Lost Patrol Carcassonne Frag Horus Heresy Mystic Wood Apples to Apples Hoax Sumo! Similarly, if there's anything on the list you think should definitely stay in the Games Library, let us know that, too. We'll be bale to make a definite announcement about the details of the auction at Wednesday's AGM. |

Oh, one more thing: if there's something on the list you're sure you'd like to bid for, but you can't make it on the Saturday, we're more than happy for you to send a proxy to bid on your behalf.

I'll be at the exec meeting anyway, but in the interests of transparency, the ones I'm interested in are:
Set Illuminati Mystic Wood Star Munchkin Judge Dredd The Feng rulebook (unless we're organising some method of having the rulebooks accessible for RP meetings, which is something worth the exec's while discussing) and I wouldn't want it myself, but we probably should sell one of the copies of Arkham Horror. -------------------- Level 7 Xtreme Dungeon Master

To be honest, there are a lot of us old fogies who don't/can't attend regular meets any more who would love to help the society out and get great games.
Sadly, you probably couldn't pick a worse weekend[1] to do this on for those of us (quite a few old fogies now) who have partners I'm actually quite shocked at all the games you listed there - some of them used to be real staples, and are still classics! Since I'm unlikely to make it, I'll probably place a proxy bid with someone once the final list is decided, but I'm likely to be interested in: QUOTE Doom B5 Wars 1st Edition B5 Wars 2nd Edition Settlers of Catan (including Seafarers, Cities & Knights and Traders & Builders expansions) Lord of the Rings[2] Global Thermonuclear War (in bag instead of box) Illuminati Frag Assorted Cheapass Games (Deadwood, Kill Doctor Lucky, Save Doctor Lucky, Unexploded Cow, Freeloader, One False Step for Mankind, The Big Idea x2, Before I Kill you Mister Bond, Witch Trial, The Big Brain Robbery) Buffy the Vampire Slayer Star Ship Troopers Necromunda (Assuming the building pieces are in reasonable condition) Diplomacy Hero Quest (my folks threw out my old copy Thud[3] [1] Aside from new years and christmas [2] Is this the co-operative one? With or without the expansions? [3] When I vanished from warwick back in 2004, my copy of Thud also disappeared.... I would probbably be interested in Arkham Horror and Horus Herisy, but I think the society should probbably keep Monty Python Fluxx and Robo Rally at least.

Ok, I've gone through the list and sorted it. First of all, the games that were not touched back when I was a regular in 2002-2004:
QUOTE Never known to have ever been used: B5 Wars 1st Edition B5 Wars 2nd Edition Succession Wars Mighty Empires (WH Fantasy Epic, fyi) Battletech x2 Woolly Bully Set Railway Rivals Enemy in Sight Global Thermonuclear War Trailer Park Gods Grass Assorted siege engine models The Awful Green Thing from Outer Space Assorted Kings and Things Pieces Naval War Lost Patrol Horus Heresy Mystic Wood Hoax Sumo! Divine Right Spanish Main Myth Fortunes Mythology & Age of Heroes (I presume these are actually the two seperate games) Hitler’s War Star Ship Troopers Blue Max Doge Judge Dredd Block Mania Dragonstar Rising Excalibur Thieves World Sanctuary Dune M25 Monty Python Flux Talisman (no-one really knew that we had it, plus lengthy) Dungeons and Dragons Board Game Star Trek RPG (Not the LARP, that was me and John's creation Necromunda 1st Edition Warhammer Rulebooks Space Hulk (Again, I don't think we knew that we had this...) Feng Shui Rulebook Megalomania (with warning from previous exec not to play as exceedingly dull) Starfarers of Catan Sky Galleons of Mars Star Wars Queens Gambit Centerpoint The New Dungeon Hero Quest Sopwith Blood Bowl Warlock Danger Guy Cosmic Encounters Starforce Alpha Centauri Outreach Painting and modelling supplies Tabu Aztanniz High Lighting Topple Robo Rally 1st Edition (Although I hear it's a classic) Fury of Dracula (I'm assuming it's the old, not the new) Great Walls So the above is probably all safe to go, and all deserve a more loving home (although maybe not megalomania QUOTE Too long games: Settlers of Catan Lord of the Rings* Risk Shogun (assuming newer one) Illuminati Diplomacy (Good, but takes at least a day...) The above really would only be rolled out on a games weekend, and seem to work best with private sessions being organised, rather than by the society. They're probably fair game to sell on, too. Next up, we have those games that whilst I've seen them played, they are in some way or another a niche game. This is normally because they have a very limited number of players, and don't make great spectator games: QUOTE Niche games: Pueblo Hera and Zeus Gootmu Light Speed (I remember something similar being played, but not if it was this or not) Timeline Nexus Star Munchkin (the poor relation to Munchkin proper) Mag Blast (Actually, it was probably this, not light speed) Solar Trader Big City (only saw it once, may have seen more use after I vanished) Buffy the Vampire Slayer (hard to place, really - we've always had buffy fans that want to try this) Thud The niche games still add some good character, and there's always someone who wants to try one or another (I was occasionally to blame for solar trader being played...). But they probably won't be missed too much if sold on to loving homes. I've the classics list ready, but to give proper suspense, I'm first going to list those games I know nothing about: QUOTE I don't know about these, after my time: Doom Everyway Arkham Horror RuneBound Igloo Pop Fish Eat Fish Shadows Over Camelot (I've played it, but not with scifi) Dungeon Twister Cthulhu 500 Vampire Prince of the City So someone else will have to comment on the above. And now, the moment you've all been waiting for, the games that you really should still be playing QUOTE Go play these now!: Lord of The Rings* Flux Carcassonne Frag (especially with the scifi house rules for telefragging!) Apples to Apples Assorted Cheapass Games (More because they're individually small, normally one would come each week) Go (there's a society for this now, thanks to how regularly adam, myself, and others played the game) Munchkin (seriously, this isn't played constantly? o.O This was THE staple!) Seriously, all those games in the final section were much-loved classics that we've still got members who remember playing them regularly. I think part of the reason these might not have seen much movement, though, could be because inevitably they're so good members get their own copies! * Yes, this is listed twice. It's a long game with limited players. But (the older) Ben was so incredible as sauron that he made this a regular spectator game This post has been edited by linamishima: 8 Feb 2010, 10:18 PM -------------------- Michelle D'israeli

QUOTE(linamishima @ 8 Feb 2010, 07:57 PM) Sadly, you probably couldn't pick a worse weekend[1] to do this on for those of us (quite a few old fogies now) who have partners I think the "short notice" is a little disingenuous. I've sent out messages about the Games Weekend both on the members' e-mail list and on the Society's facebook group (of which I know you're a member) - the last one was on the 28th of January, a good week and a half ago. And the Games Weekend's been talked about and updated in the Room Bookings thread on this forum. Plus, the Games Weekend has been on Saturday/Sunday week 5 every term for years now - which is why, sadly, it's fallen on Valentines Day this year. While we regret that, we still felt it was best to keep Week 5 for the games weekend this term, as Anime and Comp Soc - with whom we share a large overlap in membership - have bagged many of the other weekends this term. We hope that, with a whole weekend booked for gaming, most people who want to drop in will still find a spare hour to do so. I suspect that there are a lot of games in the library that, in an ideal world, we'd want to keep, but the fact of the matter is that we have very limited storage space, and even more limited ability to bring multiple games to the Wednesday meetings. Like I said upthread, the list I posted isn't the definitive list of what we're going to auction, it's a list fo all the games we own, bar the ones that regularly get brought to meetings (and the three we brought on Saturday.) Part of my reason for posting the list now was so that people could pipe up about games they didn't want us to sell before Wednesday's exec meeting. (The other reason I've posted the list now, rather than waiting for the exec to compile a definitive list on Wednesday, is to help give people more advance notice of what's likely to be on offer.) |

To echo Alex's spirit of transparency, I should say that I'll be bidding on Talisman on behalf of Adam and Jude.
For myself, I'd like to get a copy of Carcassonne, although to be honest I tend to agree with Michelle in thinking that the Society should really have a copy in its library. |

For the regular termly games meeting, it's the normal notice, and I wouldn't dream of complaining about the old schedule being kept and working well with other societies
I was specifically talking about the auction plans, as was made clear by saying "and get great games". The announcement for the games meet seems to be the first time this was mentioned. This is somewhat of a unique occurrence, unprecedented even, and a real opportunity to use the old fogy network to support the society. I want to make sure it goes as well as possible, and does the most to support the society. In fact, such an event, if properly advertised, could draw back a lot of the old members to pick up reminders of many an enjoyable wednesday afternoon. I think it's a great idea, if done right. Which means plenty of notice. If there's no urgency to ditch games, there's really no reason to do do it on short notice, and it will also give people a chance to play some of the games that will be sold off before they vanish (or perhaps to increase their value The end of the year, with the barcrawl, would actually make a lot of sense, since there's traditionally a gathering of arms then anyhow. It would also allow departing members to pick up a more meaningful momento of their time at warwick than a degree This post has been edited by linamishima: 9 Feb 2010, 01:46 AM -------------------- Michelle D'israeli

Michelle, thank you for sorting those games out - it's appreciated.
RE: the list of games. It's unlikely that all of the games listed will be going up for auction - time considerations aside, a good few of these games are enduring classics that do see play when they appear but don't appear as frequently as the regular batch. Others we're holding back for other reasons (Warhammer 1st Ed is something of a collectors piece I'm led to believe). As for the scheduling of the auction, the games weekend was selected for the convenience of our current members, and whilst it might be difficult to conceive, the actual date had not crossed my mind at least. Whilst it is heartening to hear that former members feel such a bond to the society that they would wish to participate, the society exists to serve the needs of current and future members of the society. If the "fogey network" feel that they can truly help out, then perhaps next time this event occurs (if it is successful) or when we auction off some of our duplicate books later this term, they can join us in whistful nostalgia and furious bidding (in true eurogame style). Finally, I suggest that you encourage the "fogeys" to a) sign up and B ) remain active on our new site in order to keep up to date with what's going on and remind us that not everyone is a wet behind the ears seventeen year old who thinks "Monopoly" when someone says boardgame. The message I sent out on the 28th of January said,
QUOTE We’re also hoping to auction off some of our surplus games and books, so bring a bit of cash with you. I'm sorry we weren't able to send out a full auction list with that message, but as you can see, there were quite a lot of boardgames for our Games Librarian - who's also trying to do a PhD - to catalogue! As it is, I posted a full list of games before the Exec had decided which ones to keep and which ones to sell, with the aim of giving the membership as much of a heads up as possible. As for the end of year bar crawl - yes, that would be a great time to get the "old fogeys" involved, but for a few years now that bar crawl has been organised without any involvement of the Society exec or the current membership. So in terms of giving our current, paid members a chance to participate, that could potentially be a lack. |

The following games from the list are quality and should probably stay with the society - failing that then I'll be bidding for them
Doge Pueblo Wooly Bully Igloo Pop (Ok, maybe not quality, but I liked it) Apples to Apples (/me not bidding, I already own a copy) Big City Diplomacy (maybe the society can do without a copy, since JDip will run happy on a laptop now) This post has been edited by Tomf: 10 Feb 2010, 04:29 PM -------------------- --

I'll post a proper announcement about the auction tomorrow, but a couple of details now:
Every game will have a starting bid price of £1. Games from the list I posted upthread that we'll definitely not be selling are: - Settlers of Catan - Lord of the Rings - Risk - Flux - Carcassonne - Frag - Apples to Apples - Assorted Cheapass Games - Doge - Diplomacy - Go - Great Walls - Munchkin - Shadows over Camelot - Cthulhu 500 Following Tomf's post, I suspect a case could be made for Wooly Bully - it used to be played a lot a couple of years ago, and it only has a small box, so isn't going to be difficult to store/transport. |

As no-one's spoken up against Woolly Bully, I've added it to the list of games we'll not be selling. |
